Luddite no longer
Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.
I bought a mobile phone.
I’ve always maintained that mobile phones are evil — sure, they’re handy if you need to make a call, but not if people want to call you. Then, you’re supposed to drop everything and talk to them; failure to do so, or to get back to them quickly, is a horrific social crime. That’s not a world I wanted to buy into.
But I’m getting busier, and I’ve got a job now, so continuing to avoid the little bastard was getting more difficult. So I caved in and bought a Sony Ericsson T100 on a prepaid plan. (It’s a nice phone, and it has Solitaire.)
I figure that by way of penance, I can refuse to answer most calls, never ring people back and abstain from SMS.
The thing’s for my convenience, not yours…
3 months and you won’t be able to go out of the house without it!
Just don’t play solitaire in place of being sociable to your girlfriend… :P
just don’t turn it on until you want to make a call.

Er… scrub out the “late” from that remark. I’d originally meant to write “late 20th century”, then realised some humourless pedant would probably contradict me and say “it’s actually the 21ST century, arseclown”… then I forgot to delete the “late”.

What is it like? I’ve considering buying one of these lately, because I’m sick of my old phone. I mean, they’re only $249 at HN, and in the world of mobiles, that’s fuck all.
Just a bit apprehensive about the shape of them. Are the numbers all shitty and small?
I bought it for $249 at AllPhones. It’s pretty small, and a bit squarish. Somebody told me I drive a Volvo. The numbers are a bit small, but I have pretty big finger-tips and I can press them without any trouble. And the screen’s nice and big if you’re texting people or whatever. I like it.
It’s only been a few days, and you’re already going on about “texting” people. Next comes the eventual degression of your grammar and mechanics. Then, the front-page of Mentalspace, will be laden with: lol, brb, “can u beleive dat prez”.
Ah, couldn’t help it.
I used to worry about Latter Day Luddites of the Left. I was wrong. It should have been concentrating on New Age Neanderthals of the Net.
