Bludger no more
I started work today for Senator Ruth Webber. I’m manning an ARM stall at the UWA O-day tomorrow, but starting next week I’ll be here on Thursdays and Fridays.
Apart from general constituent work, I’ve been given a couple of ongoing projects. One is to produce a weekly e-Newsletter to be sent to interested electors in O’Connor and Moore, and the other is to develop a network of student activists to campaign against the foreshadowed changes to the structure and funding of higher education.
It looks like I’ll get the chance to travel to Canberra soon, too, which will be very useful for my honours research.
If you want to get in touch with me, you can ring me at work on (08) 9409 9599.

Are you geting a junket you lucky bugger?!
A Question :
Did you volunteer or actually get a job with the senators office ?
Or did you have some special connection in. The reason i ask is the type of work your given. Which sounds quite decent for a volunteer. iTs somethign id been thinking of doing for my local memeber(McMullan, though i had figured it would be making the coffe and licking envelopes for a few months.
Well good luck, sounds a great experience even if nothing else comes off it.
No, it’s a real job. I started doing an internship with my local member, Graham Edwards, then helped out with his campaign. After that, I got relief work for another member, Jann McFarlane. I got this job when I was at the pub one night. Ruth asked me to speak to her, then offered me a job. I think Jann’s electorate officer suggested me to Ruth, but I’m not sure. Either way, I’m not complaining!
As to the type of work I’ve been given, I think it’s because a Senator doesn’t have a constituency in the same sense that a MHR does. They don’t have to face an election in the same way, and people are less aware of them, so they don’t have to do quite so much constituent work. That gives them a bit more freedom to pick a few issues that they’re interested in and campaign on them.
Hey Rob,
Where’s your stall at O’day? I wouldn’t mind a drink if you are up for it, I’m not busy. Do they still have that subsidised tavern? :-)
Email me with details/time/place you will be, if you feel like drinking/arguing with a redneck :-)
Pardon me Rob, but isn’t that sort of censorship the sort of thing you’d normally campaign against? Did you reveal something that perhaps should have been kept to yourself?
Another great para-military operation against the enemy today, Rob! Look forward to more fun in the future.
