Don’t think it’s suddenly a case of “Deals aint deals any more”, Robert. It’s simply another variation on a theme that’s been playing for some time now, after factions lost most of their ideological significance, and became cartels for organising the distribution of spoils.
once in my brief foray into student politicking many, many years ago as a member of Unity (the Labor Right faction) I recall we did a deal with the ‘uglies’ of the Liberal Right and the trotskyite Left Alliance to undermine the campaign of the Labor Left candidate for presidency of the SRC by appropriate preference deals
