Thin blue line

The front page of today’s West carries an absolutely disgraceful story of police abuse of American students at my university:

The West Australian was told some drinkers at the Orient Hotel last Tuesday were Notre Dame University students but the abuse of the US students erupted after a fight at the Zanzibar nightclub.

During that incident, one of the seven WA officers, who are all from the Fremantle district, was allegedly assaulted by one of the American Notre Dame students and had a tooth knocked out.

Enraged, some of the drunken officers tracked the American down to the university’s student accommodation.

It was there that several American students, including some who had nothing to do with the clash at the Zanzibar, were made to kneel on the ground and were humiliated.

It is understood the taunting included comments such as “Yankies go home”, “What are you doing in our country” and “What are you doing in Iraq”.

Frightened students called the police.

Judging by the report’s description of the cops’ behaviour before they arrived at Zanzibar, it’s not at all surprising that someone ended up belting them one.

Rumour has it that a similar incident occurred earlier this year: a group of bikies from a well-known gang followed the students back to their dorm, kicked down the door and threw someone down a flight of stairs.

Who would have thought that two gangs who wear leather jackets and club colours would behave so similarly?

Thank you. I have now found a group of people I WOULD like to see sent to serve with the US in Iraq.

After all, they have so much to teach.

It’s interesting, though disturbing, to see the anti-Americanism promoted by the media and elites of this country manifesting itself in such a way.

Hmm reviewing earlier post Sunday session comment - would like to replace it with mild sarcasm of “I’d imagine the officers were all worked up from reading Phillip Adams”. Much nicer.

Yes, your second pithy reply works much better. It may be too subtle, though!

Left-wing bias in the police force! They obviously watch too much ABC…

It is always refreshing to read the comfortable middle class elitism purporting to be liberalism that spews forth from the student mind. Perhaps before condeming the actions of any person the truth, yes truth of the matter should be sought out. In essence is it the jackboot wearing heavy browed Police officers to blame for this, or perchance the alcohol fuelled student soon to be flying home and forgetting this ever happened.
Methinks your views best represent the commercial sensitivities of Notre Dame - the elitism you so detest

While I have not personally been the victim of a beating by jackboot-wearing anti-American thugs hepped up on free love, chardonnay and Phillip Adams — and thus cannot speak from personal experience — I’d imagine it’s not the sort of thing one forgets in a hurry, “dissenter”.

I am sure it would not if that were indeed the case mark. However the crux of the complaint from the students seems to be that after one of their own has knocked two teeth from the mouth of an off duty Police Officer, someone had the gall to actually shout and use swaer words whilst trying to do their job ie arrest an offender. Had young Adam a) not thrown the punch, b) not tried to hide in the dorm afterwards, or c) took his punishment like a man in court instead of weaving an elaborate web of deceit and lies then this incident would be all over with. Instead seven officers, one of whom is the actual victim of a criminal offence, are the ones holding the can because our government is overly sensitive to the notion that visiting students will stop lying our state with cash

You know, the problem isn’t with the jacks v. students, or lefties v. righties, it’s with men and alcohol - get a couple drinks into them and they start beating their chests - all alike.
Politics is simply an excuse to justify the need to connect with their primal nature - maybe they should all start attending sweatlodges so they can balance their chi - I believe they have those in Freo, that would probably be quite handy to the notradame students AND those delightful representatives of our justice system. I seem to recall a certain homosapien-challenged editor engaging in some rather feisty physical activity outside a bar not that long ago…

The Good Book [which Notr Dame presunably endorses?] tells us it is better to give than to receive. Students, generally speaking, have always tended to take more kindly to giving abuse and/or physical force, than receiving it. Why shouldn’t they be quite upset about their sacred site being invaded by aggressive menials?

Absolutely disgraceful the incident(s) may have been, it’s undeniable that it (they) were also cack-inducingly funny.

The WA Police may be shit-house at preventing crime, but they’ve got a keen grasp of farcical humour, that’s for sure.

Bullshit, ab. That’s not even a -good generalisation-.

Now, if you were talking about methamphetamine, you might have a valid point…
