Make way for President Arnie

Yobbo mentions a bill to remove a constitutional prohibition on foreign-born citizens becoming President of the USA.

About bloody time, I say. Although I think Australia’s Section 44(i) restrictions are reasonable, it seems ludicrous that a person who might have spent fifty or sixty years living in the US would be ineligible for the presidency.

I hope Arnold Schwarzenegger would lose a presidential election, but I think he should lose on his merits and not because of some silly archaic ban on his candidature.

Whats so bad about Arnie? He’d certainly be better than either Bush or Kerry…Are you a fan of Hillary Clinton’s?

As an avowed lefty, Rob probably doesn’t like the idea of a rightie becoming President, no matter who he is. Would Arnie really be a better President than Kerry? I’m not really sure what Kerry would be like, as all I’ve heard about him is the bullshit the Republicans are spinning…

FWIW, I agree with Rob about the Bill. While it’s one thing to prevent people holding foreign or dual citizenship from ruling the nation (as his example from the Cth Const does), but quite another to say “if you weren’t born here, you can’t be trusted”. If Arnie wants to run for Pres, I’m all for it (I’d still prefer the Dem candidate to win though).

So if Arnie ran as a Democrat it would be ok? His politics are quite similar to (Bill) Clinton’s.

If Arnie were to run as a Democrat, the Repub candidate would presumably be to the right of him, which would be a Bad Thing from my POV…

Anybody to the right of Leon Trotsky would be a bad thing from your POV

Schwarzenegger is not the only foreign-born politician who might benefit.

murph… um… do you actually notice who each commentor is, or do you just assume that anyone who agrees with Rob from time to time is part of a giant uberleftist entity with no opinions of their own?
