Confused? Me too.
Last week The West Australian made a disgraceful suggestion that Labor MP John Quigley is having an affair (Quigley is getting married today). He was rightfully indignant. The editor of The West, Paul Armstrong, threatened to end Quigley’s career unless he apologised for criticising the rag. Quigley organised a “sting”, inviting the Sunday Times to photograph a bizarre deal Armstrong set up with Quigley. Confused? Me too. And if someone can explain what John Kizon, the Coffin Cheaters and a Liberal front-bencher have to do with it, please fill me in.

First up can I declare an interest etc..
Have you read the Adshead columns? There was no suggestion that I could see that Quigley was having an affair. Quigley seemed to beat that up with his own hysterical press conference.
Your version of events is what the Sunday Times ran with in early editions. It’s not what they ran with in later editions, and it’s not the version of events that The West, Paul Armstrong or Gary Adshead subscribe to.
First up can I declare an interest etc..
Feel free.
Have you read the Adshead columns?
Yes, I read Inside Cover every morning — it’s usually the most accurate part of the paper — and the first thing that jumped out at me was the innuendo about a mysterious female passenger in the car. I know it’s a gossip column, but come on.
As to the events that unfolded after that, my post makes it clear that I have no idea what was going on. It doesn’t surprise me that the Sunday Times story (and I’ve only read the version that landed in my driveway — which is exactly the same as the online version) is not supported by your paper, but the best response The West has come up with so far has been “Quigley moved people to get a table at the cafe.”
You’ll forgive me for being a little underwhelmed by the rebuttal.
Have a gander at who part wrote it that will explain the confusion. Maybe he actually does write well but the sub editors dislike him as much as I do. Maybe some of Egan’s brilliance will radiate down on him.
I don’t think it is v gd for the daily oracle to be drinking in proximity of CC’s or JK very dicey for your credibility/general state of health. I hope his wife gave him a good paddling when she got him home. Very Naughty.
Further what is the deal with that editor. With his neo-conservative lets bastardize w.a’s only daily newspaper into an advertorial UK style tabloid type attitude?
In his interview with Bartlett he talked about the sanctity of the 4th estate, what a load of clap trap - he wouldn’t know ethics if they stood up in his soup, which is entirely evident in the sexist political reporting/ witch hunts he initiates. Now what is this guy’s agenda? Why doesn’t Ian Law just cut his losses and ship him back to the U.K.
Let’s hope it doesn’t sink to the levels of the viscious attack orchestrated in State Parliament on Penny Easson by Dr No Know?
I’m sure Robert, that you understand that, even though there’s a question mark?
Can anyone really believe the writings of Gary Asshead… er: Adshead columns..?Any story coming form a drunken and lying reporter is not worth the paper written on…..
Hi ItK - that comment is defamatory, there are laws against that. Besides if you are going to criticize someone publically - how about you put a little more substance behind your argument?
Sure…just look at this link
http://www.ifmo.com.au/wwwboard/messages/8994.html
the point is that the press in this case Gary Adshead does mislead his readers with the impunity while the real fact are quite different.
Having read some of Gary Giveshea…..sorry Adhead’s work for some time now, I feel I understand that he has a job to do, he has to sell papers, justify his exsistance and maintain the inflation of an ego big enough to have its own post code.
I would be frustrated too if I were to be in my mid 40’s or however old he is, and still writing gossip. The thing that makes me feel quite sad for him is that he actually thinks he is a journalist of “Time” magazine callibre. I am sure “Time” would be very interested in syndicating his 10 part epic on the Gum Tree at State Parliment house. That is truely cutting edge ….it is a wonder 60 minutes havent picked it up.
He may hit the target on occasion, but I have seen him strike out completely and destroy lives in other attempts to fill the gap in his gossip column. That is the price you pay for what is essentially a monopoly in WA print media.
Hi itk - I have read through that forum and I haven’t found much substance in it at all, is that all the evidence you have?
GA has done a lot of very good work, and a journos mistakes are in the public domain for all to see for all eternity - how about yours itk or yours, wo?
Your comments are quite emotive - and as such, ironically, what you are writing is also plainly attempting to influence the way people view GA, without any substance attached to it - just like ‘gossip.’ (your word not mine)
In my experience he is right on track, it might take me a few months to catch up on some of the background to a story, but it is all there - if you do the research.
btw - you think it is bad with a monopoly on the media - the gloves are off in a competitive environment.
Hello ab, (or should I say GA)
I am not saying for a minute, that no good has come from his (your) gossip column,
I have however seen first hand, the damage that has been done as a result of IC getting it wrong and sensationalising a story.
And yes…there is solid proof of manipulation and twisting, quoting out of context.
I personally dont care if the readers think highly of Giveshead or not.
I stand by what I say…..If , as has been written by a pro GA cronie, he will be writing for “Time” one day, then at least have some integrity.
If he is what he says he is, then he does not have to stoop to the crap he prints.
I know for a fact he has it wrong on a number of occasions, one or two of which WILL come back and bite him.
You speak of journalists “mistakes”….those “mistakes” effect peoples lives..it is something GA has little regard for, he does not care of the people he effects.
ab, if you want to know specifics, I am more than happy to show the reasons for my opinion. and the evidence to support all my claims.
Step up to the plate ab (GA) lets talk without you hiding behind the cloak of your annonymity. He (you) break fundamental laws in an effort to obtain the gossip on which you base your “column”, this WILL come back to haunt you……mark my words.
WO
And talking about crooked journalist, The West Australian editor Paul Armstrong has been fined a cool 5000 bucks for the same disregard on good and fair reporting…then again at 32 y.o one couldn’t except to much of him. Maybe Asshead should now replace him… LOL
