From today’s Crikey email:
Political advertising, WA style
Political correspondent Christian Kerr writes:
OK, so the Greens ad in The West Australian on Saturday was pretty bl**dy good — say “far canal” out loud slowly — but can it match the effort from One Nation candidate Brian Burns.
He’s taken out space in The Albany paper to proclaim the promise to:
STOP selling OFF state assets to WORLD ORGANISED GLOBAL STEALTH
That’s yampy — but the layout isn’t. Instead, it seems to be very calculated. The first letter of every word is bold, so the subliminal message is:
Stop selling assets to W*GS
If One Nation have finally discovered subtlety, the Liberals seem to be embracing management speak.
Colin Barnett knows how to “action decisions”, according to one of their TV spots.
That’s odd. They’re big on traditional values when it comes to issues like homosexuality — so why not grammar?

odd considering quite a few one notion candidates and members are Wogs themselves – anyone remember John Pasquarelli, a nice little wog name for sure :-)
oh and for those who may find offence, we 2nd generation italians use the word wog as a term of endearment :-)
Ouch, that is quite dodgy. Can it be verified that it was actually put there on purpose?
Just on the Greens’ far canal remark, I think it’s fair to point out that Brian Greig got a short letter printed in The Aus sometime last week (ie before the Saturday West), in which he used the same phrase at the end. He might be a bit miffed were we to not give him his due…
The sundry slimes launched a bit of a defence aganist Paul (the ego)Murray and on Monday Murray launched into Armstrong, but failed to mention the Worst reporter who worked for the nats the fact he Murray worked for the Times untill they whatevered him, said nothing about the mystery phone number appearing in the Nats advertising before the Worst used it as a hot line failed to mention the bias artical by a liberal inclined commentator, said not a word about bias at all,on Tues on the meet the premier bit after wingeing about how his segment was the best thing since sliced bread and people being accountable he launched into and attack on the ALP govt,i all ways though political comment had to have a disclaimer or authorised by on it, or do the rules that apply to everyone else not apply to the Ego at 6pr ,i hope the Govt is returned cause if i was Gallop it would be a cold day in hell before i gave Murray the time of day, also it will be interesting to hear his justifcation of his anti govt bias on monday
Youie, I can’t let it pass unremarked that I used “Far Canal” as the headline to a post on my blog three days before Senator Greig’s letter was published. Not that I was being entirely original myself. A reader informed me that the joke’s origin was in a Gilbert & Sullivan pastiche on the Two Ronnies circa 1975, but I encountered it about 10 years ago in the New Musical Express. Mark E Smith from The Fall was pictured in a gondola in Venice above a caption reading “Far canal, it’s Mark E Smith”.
I have to say that I originally saw it on the Poll Bludger too…
But, on the One Nation ad, my GOD, that is bad.
Thanks for posting it, Robert…who knows… the Greens might have a response…(not that it’ll get out there! haha!)
