Welcome to beerland

Over at Larvatus Prodeo, debate about the Papacy has segued into a far more interesting discussion about beer. It reminded me about the beer map (via) published by the Malt Shovel Brewery:

Malt Shovel Brewery beer map

I prefer to wander around the western side of the map, with occasional forays into the more densely populated eastern regions.

Where do you live?

Looks like I am a populist – favouring Boags, Cascade Premium and Stella.

Same as Robert, though I’m evidently more discriminating in my choice of lager. The “ales” on that list are pretty weak – you can’t get decent bitter in Australia. Don’t get me started on American “beer”.

I ignore the East, lurking around the dead centre and tend to head Sou’West on a cold, quiet eve.

Coopers, all the way. The no additives and ‘Best after’ date stamp has sold me.

Probably more a centrist on this one!

    I prefer brown ales.

Newcastle Brown Ale all the way here. Walk the dog and the VB drinkers can go and get fucked.

Sorry about the RWDB intolerance but Newcastle are about to play Manure and I’m grumpy. I’m serious about Newcastle Brown, Coopers Pale and Coopers Sparkling.

And VB really is vile. As is West End rubbish. Grow a palate and grow up.

It’s Boags (premium for preference, draught when on tap) all the way, but I occasionally make a foray into the land of the Cooper’s Sparkling Ale, or further west to the realm of the Newcastle Brown. In fact, Brown was my first legal beer.

On this, I am with Scott all the way. Except for the occasional foray into wheat beers.

Start with Coopers and then in a deft manouvre outflank the worst of the CUB lagers taking a few what beers with me before consolidating my position in the lower regions of the pilsners.

Newcastle Ale has it’s moments but tends to taste like the squeezings of a mopped-up better beer.

Alternate your Reschs with Guinness and Tooheys Old, and you’ve got a recipe for happiness. That, and a sore morning.
What’s wrong with the CUB/Lion Nathan lagers anyway? That’s what the rest of us drink. What a bunch of f*ckin’ beer snobs.

    Oh great another beer thread.

The only beers I’ve met that I didn’t like was Tooheys New and Foster’s.

But I’ve settled down in Newky Brown/Tooheys Old land. Coopers Dark Ale isn’t on the map but that’s probably around there too.

No snobbery here either, I will happily drink VB and Carlton Draught, going to the footy isn’t the same without the latter. Even if it costs $&@*% $5.20 a cup now. I mean, Jesus. Seriously, I think footy fans have to organise a catering boycott one week. Bring sandwiches and go sober.

Liam, don’t be hurt. It’s just that all the CUB beers taste the same and it’s not a good taste. EB and Swan Draft do cold, wet, and sessional so much better.

Your map is lovely and I am a lager lady and I like Cascade. On the REAL MAP I live in a city with a UNIVERSITY course and International Beer Judging Fest. Ballarat takes it’s beer seriously and when a whole bunch of local hotels were bought by Lion Nathan, the ute boys just moved away to where they could drink their choice. Lion Nathan owns some closed up pubs – I love that.

Anybody else lucky enough to live in WA can get one of the best beers available anywhere, Alpha Ale from Matilda Bay. Truly great stuff.

I have to tip my hat at the Coopers range too, especially the Extra Strong Vintage Ale. James Squire should get a mention for the Porter and the Indian Pale Ale, but the rest is shit.

    Anything but Tooheys.
After all the pubs around Melbourne Uni were purchased by Lion Nathan, we were forced to go drink in an old man’s pub. We didn’t know it then but it was also a hang out for various members of the underworld involved in the Gangland killings.

Left-wing all the way…somewhere between Toohey’s Old and Coopers Stout (a truly fabulous drink). I would like to see Australian breweries populate the area of the map around Newcastle Brown Ale, though – that stuff’s like suckling honey from the breast of a virgin. Or something. PhD-student poverty means I haven’t tasted the stuff in over two years.

Pilsener Urquel is the nectar of gods… but I’m all over the shop. Anything except cheap aussie or US lagers is fine.

    I’m a fan of the dark/thick brews.

If there are any Canberran’s among this crew, have you ever tried the Wig and Pen home brew range? mmmmMM Beeeeerrrrr

    Coopers anything.
Yeah I can’t resist a Guinness at times either.
And I confess to a taste for Jimmy’s Amber. Which is about as far right as I will wander these days.

I drink XXXX regularly. I guess it can be inferred, therefore, that I’d drink anything on that map.
