Is the Pope a Catholic?

WA Opposition Leader Matt Birney is having a terrible run at the moment. First, he was overseas while the one vote one value deal was finalised, earning him the nickname, “Missing-in-Action Matt.”

He arrived home to questions about whether it was appropriate to bring his girlfriend on a parliamentary trip abroad (for Anzac Day commemorations). This was no big deal because, unlike Trish Draper, he was up front about the situation and got the all-clear before he left. Still, that doesn’t help when talk-back callers are angry.

It was his response to one such caller that has landed him in his latest spot of bother. Asked whether he would take his girlfriend to meet the Pope, he replied:

It’s a very hypothetical question. If it were the sort of function where it was appropriate to have partners there, ie, if the Pope happened to have his partner there, then yes, absolutely.

Oops. That’s quite a hypothetical answer.

Doesn’t inspire much confidence, does it?

Update: It gets funnier: Birney claims to be a Roman Catholic.

Ahaha! That’s actually kind of funny. But in a weird, clueless way.

Does that rank with his boasting about being blind drunk in Bali ? Methinks if he keeps this up, the Libs will have second thoughts about him being Leader and will try and Parachute Mark Olsen to be their leader :-)

And The Oz article have wrongly attributed Tom Stephens as being a Lib, when he is really a Govt Backbencher :-)

That’s the problem when you move away from entitlements for married spouses only. Married means a legally sanctioned union between a man and a woman for those of you getting a bit hazy like Birney these days. Wait for the talk-back callers when the homosexuals trip off at taxpayer’s expense.

As I said, I don’t see it as a problem. Talkback callers are just observas whose world has passed them by.

lol! No, doesnt inspire much confidence at all. Even if he was trying to be funny, he failed dismally.

It’s alright Rob, with 2 young adults under my belt, perhaps my world has been passed on. Maybe the WA talkback callers are griping, that their Birneys who they don’t vote for, are unfortunately not more like their Howards, who they do. Still, it seems even if your bloke gets up regularly you might still be griping about it here http://www.channel4.com/news/special-reports/special-reports-storypage.jsp?id=104

Hey Rob! Did you realise Bob Carr was a Howard man through and through, although he reckons he can be bought off if the price is right here http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15186496-29277,00.html

Perhaps Birney knows something we don’t.

    lol anthony.

    My thoughts exactly.

Werent there rumours about such a thing? Although, taking an 8 year old boy would probably be frowned upon…
