Colophon

The current design is inspired by the Communist newspaper that was published in Perth in the early part of last century. It began as the Red Star, but later became the Workers’ Star.

Although I don’t endorse all of its contents, especially in the latter (Stalinist) period, I have a soft spot for labour and socialist newspapers. As Terry Irving says:

Every political tendency in the movement felt that it could not exist without a periodical; indeed, producing and selling the paper was for some socialist groups their only sign of life.

Some things never change.

I’m especially impressed by the earliest editions of the Red Star, which were low-budget affairs: hand-drawn, type-written, and roneographed. I have no doubt that those involved would be blogging if they were with us today.

The typeface in my masthead is Antique Type, and the star comes from Artistamp Medium.

Previous designs

This blog has progressed through a number of titles and designs. There’s a clear thread running through them, though, in terms of the colour scheme and historical references.

Technical bits

Red Rag runs on Wordpress 1.5, coupled with Brian’s Latest Comments, Dunstan’s Time Since, Smart Archives, and a couple of other plugins I’ve smoodged together myself.
